On Saturday, 9th October, SHC members demonstrated calligraphy at the Winchester
City Museum for English Language Heritage day.  Steve Brine MP for Winchester
dropped in and had a go
at calligraphy, whilst another student and budding young calligrapher was so thrilled with the opportunity he couldn’t tear himself away! Long
may his youthful interest continue!

Hampshire Calligraphers Summer School

We were delighted to have enjoyed our first Summer School, taking place
at Badger Farm on a sunny weekend in July. Below are some examples of the
exciting results the groups produced during the two days...

We felt 18 years should be marked with a party, so at our AGM on 22nd May 2010 we had a cake and bubbly, with calligraphic party games. Teams tore paper into capital letters, then spelled out calligraphic words in a race against the clock. The letterforms were creative, and letter spacing wasn't our primary concern, but you'll see the final result was pretty impressive so we lined up for a photo.
As a souvenir of the Society's coming of age, every member gets a limited edition print that comprises work from several of our prominent calligraphers, with grateful thanks for their generosity.

HC flying the flag at HYDE ABBEY 900

We were delighted to take part in the HYDE ABBEY 900 exhibition at Winchester's Discovery Centre on three separate days, demonstrating and encouraging visitors to try out quill pens on scraps of vellum, in keeping with the ancient manuscripts on display, and also to show them how we use calligraphy today. We were impressed by how quickly and well some of the children picked it up!
